3U Cluster Solution from Westek

Westek Technology has announced their new “high availability” Cluster computer system solution in just 3U of standard rack mount equipment. The Cluster solution, launched first for Windows NT based applications, comprises of two dual Intel Pentium PIII based high performance rack mounting 1U computers, and a 1U RAID 5 disk storage unit shared between the two computers, with up to 292GB of fast SCSI disk storage.
A version supporting Linux operating system is expected shortly.
If either one of the two computers fails, the other unit takes over, ensuring very reliable operation without loss of data. Each computer runs either Windows NT Enterprise Edition, or Windows 2000 Advanced Server, which supports clustering software allowing the two independent computer units to be operated in either active-passive or active-active modes.
Each of the 1U computer systems incorporates dual Pentium PIII processors running at up to 1GHz and up to 2GB of system RAM, each with their own removable hard disk drives, floppy disk and CD ROM. Each unit has triple Ethernet connections, and fast SCSI Ultra 160 connections to the RAID module. One of the three Ethernet ports on each computer is used for communications between the two computers, monitoring heartbeat to notify of processor failure. The other two 100 base T Ethernet ports on each 1U computer are available for use by the application.
The central disk storage unit contains 4 fast SCSI hard disk drives configured in RAID 5 format, with three active and one hot standby drive for optimum data security. The 1U RAID system incorporates a high performance removable SCSI RAID controller, and full functional alarming on fan fail, disk drive temperature or fault, power supply, controller or even environmental conditions. Fan units are also hot-swap and replaceable without powering down the unit using a unique no-tool access system.

According to Nick Wilson, Westek’s sales and marketing director, “we haven’t seen a more cost effective cluster solution on the market that offers anything like the performance or availability in such a small space. Is this another first for Westek Technology? Customers are demanding more processing power with high reliability in smaller foot prints to meet today’s application needs in mission critical areas”
The new 3U Cluster solution adds to Westek’s range of 1U computers recently announced including the new 1U Quad PC with integrated KVM switch, and high performance 1U Sun and Intel processing units.
