What is a Passive Backplane?

A technology where all of the active circuitry that is normally found on an "active" PC motherboard (such as the CPU) is moved onto a plug-in card (SBC). The motherboard itself is replaced with a passive backplane usually with many more expansion slots for add in cards, with a minimum of active components. Passive backplanes are therefore very reliable and offer high capacity and high slot density   A passive backplane has several advantages including the ease with which cards can be added and removed from the computer system:  Passive backplanes are available from 2 to 21 ISA and/ or PCI slots.

What is an SBC? (Single Board Computer)

An SBC is essentially a plug-in "motherboard" that simply plugs into slot on a passive backplane. The SBC contains the CPU, memory and optional SVGA, LAN and SCSI or IDE disk interfaces. An SBC is a single board plug-in computer and will usually occupy just one system slot on a passive backplane.

What is CompactPCI?

The newest specification for PCI-based industrial computers is called CompactPCI. It is electrically a superset of desktop PCI with a different physical form factor. CompactPCI utilizes the Eurocard form factor popularized by the VME bus.

Defined for both 3U (100mm by 160 mm) and 6U (160mm by 233 mm) card sizes, CompactPCI has the following features:

Standard Eurocard Dimensions (complies with IEEE 1101.1 mechanical standards)
High Density 2mm Pin-and-Socket Connectors (IEC approved and Bellcore qualified)
Vertical Card Orientation for good cooling
Positive Card Retention
Excellent Shock and Vibration Characteristics
Metal Front Panel
User I/O Connections on Front or Rear of module
Standard Chassis available from many Suppliers
Uses Standard PCI Silicon Manufactured in Large Volumes
Staged Power Pins for Hot Swap Capability (Future)
Eight Slots in Basic Configuration. Easily expanded with Bridges

What are your leadtimes?

We aim to deliver all orders within 1-2 weeks for standard products. Special and customised systems are business as usual for Westek and the lead time for these maybe longer.

What about support

As a Westek customer you have free access to our helpdesk by telephone or email, operating between 8.30am to 6pm on working days, Monday to Friday. We offer a wide range of enhanced support services including on site support and 7 x 24 emergency on site services.

How are products tested

Quality is of paramount importance at Westek. As part of our ISO9000 qulaity process, all system level products are subject to a documented final test procedure, which includes full operational testing using a computer diagnostic software program, and a full 72 hour active burn in to eliminate any early life failures from our products. A copy of the test results is shipped with each computer server.
